My grandmother taught me to sew when I was about 8 years old. Like most, she sewed by hand using only needle and thread. Some of my first creations were hand embroidered pieces. I enjoyed this because it was an extension of drawing, which I fell in love with around age 11 or 12. I learned that I had a natural ability to duplicate pretty much anything I saw. I began to explore painting, soon afterward, and discovered that I could easily match colors by blending two or three different hues together. Beginning in middle school with my woodworking class, I found also, that I was talented in making things from wood. During junior high and high school I continued to draw and paint, however I extended my artistic world to include sculpture, using fabric, paper, cardboard, wood, clay, wire and other found objects to create 3-dimensional artwork. As an adult, I have made many cakes and other sweet treats for birthdays and other celebrations. I truly love creating beautiful, useful stuff. I take much pride in the final outcome, so throughout the entire process I am very careful and meticulous about every detail.

I am a single mother of two sons and one daughter. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementry Education from Oklahoma State University. I taught for 18 years in public schools as well as homeschooling. I also do private tutoring for reading, math, and writing. I am currently pursuing my second Bachelor of Science degree in Design, Housing and Merchandising focusing on Apparel Design and Production from Oklahoma State University.

I started Handmade by Tonya in 2004 as a word-of-mouth, if somebody needed sewing done they would ask me, accident really. After a few years, I decided to get online with a website and still had the word-of-mouth type of clients. I mainly sold quilts. Lots of photo quilts! It didn't occur to me to take pictures of the stuff I was making until around 2007. That is when I started my online business, handmade-by-tonya.com. I still made quilts, but added baby and children's clothing, soft sculpture dolls, doll clothing and accessories, and my children's book, HIDE AND SEEK, which I had gotten a copyright for in 2007. Soon afterward, I expanded to include clothing for teens and adults. In 2014, I was awarded the Best of Cushing award for best baby clothing store, having only an online presence. I have always worked out of my home and done virtually no advertising. Now I expand yet again, including artwork, woodworking projects, formal clothing, as well as baked goods.
